The 10th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 10), held from September 16-20, 2024, finalized interim guidelines for the use of ammonia as fuel. This marks a significant milestone as ammonia gains traction as a potential clean fuel for the maritime sector.
The guidelines will provide functional requirements for vessels using ammonia, although detailed provisions are still under development. These interim guidelines aim to address safety concerns and ensure the safe use of ammonia on ships, with further discussions planned to refine the regulations.
CCC 10 also reviewed the International Gas Carrier (IGC) Code and made amendments to ensure safety in the transport of liquefied gases. These updates include enhanced requirements for safety functions, ventilation, and handling of hazardous materials.
The complete amendment proposal is expected to be considered by MSC 109 in 2024, with an aim for adoption in 2025 and entry into force by January 2028.
