The ARISE consortium has successfully completed its final full-scale experimental campaign involving controlled releases of refrigerated ammonia at sea.

Conducted in June 2026, the campaign marks a major milestone for the project and concludes the principal experimental phase of ARISE. The trials were designed to improve understanding of the behaviour of ammonia following an accidental release in a marine environment and to generate experimental data for risk assessment, consequence modelling, detection, monitoring and emergency preparedness.

The campaign brought together a wide range of complementary measurement systems, including atmospheric detection technologies, infrared imaging, instrumented floating platforms, underwater sensors, mobile and remote monitoring systems, and meteorological and oceanographic measurements.

Completion of the sea trials does not mark the end of the scientific work. The substantial amount of data collected is now being consolidated, quality-checked and analysed by the ARISE technical partners.

No definitive conclusions from the full-scale experiments will be communicated until the corresponding data have been technically validated.

The next phase will focus on transforming these experimental data into scientific and operational knowledge, including improved consequence modelling, risk assessment, monitoring strategies, emergency response guidance and assessment of potential environmental impacts.
